Holiday Parties without Holiday Stress

You want to have a great holiday party, but don't want to feel the stress associated with entertaining a lot of guests. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to host a party without having to worry about every single detail? Give these five tips a try at your next bash – and have a great time at no cost to your relaxation.

Hire Help This is not as expensive as you think. There are many reliable catering services, wait staff services, and bartenders that will work your party for a reasonable fee. If you get quotes that don't fit into your budget, consider hiring neighborhood teens to serve your food (remember, teens cannot tend bar or serve alcohol, so you may want to hire a bartender or have a self-serve bar for the evening). This will free you up to enjoy your own party as much as your guests will!

Have a Potluck or “BYOB” If you find yourself fretting over food and drinks too much, you'll miss out on all the fun. If catering is too expensive for your budget, then have everyone bring a favorite dish to share with the group. Make sure that you provide all the essentials (in case someone forgets or changes their minds without telling you), and that will help reduce the stress. If you've got the food covered but don't know what to do about the drinks, have everyone bring a different spirit. If you serve margaritas or the like, and provide soft drinks, and let everyone know, then they can bring their favorite spirits to share.

Go Store Bought instead of Home Made If you insist on making all the food, don't waste time doing every single step by hand – buy deli platters, cakes, pies, anything you can that's ready-to-eat – you may spend more up front, but you'll save a bundle in headaches and stress. If you don't want people to know it's all from the store, transfer the items onto your own serving platters and dishes.

Check the Guest List Planning ahead can really help reduce your stress levels, especially when coordinating a guest list. If there are people you know are not going to get along, you may want to forgo inviting them altogether and go with people you know will play nicely together. If you have guests on your list who are allergic to pets, then you'll know to do your vacuuming and find a place for pup and kitty for the evening. Saving time, planning ahead, and unapologetically taking shortcuts are the best ways to survive any type of holiday parties and lower your holiday stress – no matter which holiday you're celebrating!
